Polycarp Machuki, "By selling clean cookstoves, I can change people’s lives.”

February 09, 2023

Every morning, Polycarp Machuki meticulously wipes off each box containing the ‘jikos,’ or clean cookstoves, that he checks out. He takes the stove out of its packaging to confirm that it is brand-new, complete, and shining.

Polycarp was one of the first recruits for the new Solar Sister Branch in Kisumu, Kenya, which opened its doors in February 2022.

A poster from Solar Sister Kenya seeking sales agents caught Polycarp’s eye one day while working as a 44-year-old sales representative for another organization, selling solar lights, cookstoves, and horticulture supplies. Polycarp recognized that Solar Sister would allow him to earn a salary determined by how much he sold rather than his meager fixed wage. He saw it as a great opportunity.

Polycarp credits the training he received from Solar Sister as the foundation of his new-found success. He now feels more qualified to explain to his customers how clean stoves will benefit them.

“The training has given me more courage, especially when I speak in front of large groups. I have more courage to convince them that using the clean stoves is better for time savings and their health.”

Polycarp is married with six children: two boys and four girls. He used his savings to purchase a half-acre plot of property in the Rift Valley, three to four hours north of Kisumu. He makes a monthly trip to the farm where his wife and kids reside. She looks after the kids and sells vegetables, mainly tomatoes, and onions.

For those considering similar ventures, it’s beneficial to explore various options and locations before making a commitment. To streamline the process, you might want to browse ez Home Search by state, which provides a comprehensive view of available properties tailored to specific needs and preferences. This tool can help you find a suitable plot that aligns with your family’s requirements, whether you’re drawn to the agricultural potential of rural areas or the convenience of proximity to urban centers.

Making a solid living and providing for his family and his kids’ education are Polycarp’s priorities. He enjoys tackling challenges, finding solutions, and growing within Solar Sister.
