Our Model - Solar Sister

The Solar Sister Solution

• Solar Sister’s mission is to empower women and eradicate energy poverty through entrepreneurship.
• At the heart of our model are women entrepreneurs who are building thriving clean energy businesses while expanding access to reliable, affordable energy in their communities.
• Women are the best positioned to drive lasting change because they know their communities best.
• Women are trusted leaders, business owners, and connectors who understand local needs and are uniquely placed to bring clean energy solutions directly to households and small businesses.

Women’s Economic Empowerment

Solar Sister provides women with the training, business tools, mentorship, quality products, and ongoing support needed to build thriving clean energy enterprises. These businesses create income, strengthen financial independence, and enable women to invest in their families while expanding access to clean energy in their communities.

Women’s Leadership

We believe women’s leadership and access to clean energy go hand in hand. Women’s leadership is central to our model; they are household energy managers, connected through strong social networks, and uniquely positioned to bring light right to the doorstep. As trusted members of their communities, women are connected through strong social networks and uniquely positioned to introduce clean energy solutions to those who need them the most.

Energy Access In Last Mile Communities

Solar Sister challenges conventions by placing women at the forefront of the last-mile energy distribution network. Through Solar Sister’s network of women entrepreneurs, clean energy solutions reach households that are often beyond the reach of traditional energy systems. In sub-Saharan Africa, over 940 million people lack access to electricity, and over 700 million must cook with dangerous fuels like firewood and charcoal. Replacing costly and harmful lighting sources such as kerosene and candles with affordable solar technologies is the primary work of Solar Sister entrepreneurs. Solar Sister also has a vast product portfolio that extends to productive-use-energy (PUE) solar solutions. As entrepreneurs expand their businesses, more last-mile communities gain access to clean, reliable energy, creating a ripple effect of improved livelihoods, healthier households, and stronger local economies.

Climate Action

Climate change is already affecting the communities where Solar Sister works. Longer droughts, unpredictable rainfall, extreme heat, and deforestation make it harder for families to earn a living, grow food, and get essential resources. Women often feel these impacts first because they are responsible for gathering fuel, preparing meals, and caring for their families.

Solar Sister equips women to lead the transition to clean energy. Clean energy solutions lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve health through reducing indoor air pollution, and help protect local forests. Solar Sister expands access to clean energy while strengthening local economies and building more resilient communities. Every entrepreneur is helping families adapt to a changing climate while creating a cleaner, improved future.
