“I have not only grown as an entrepreneur but have also become a representative of the village at the ward level, allowing me to advocate for essential community needs.”
One of Solar Sister’s veteran entrepreneurs, Luciana Martin Morembwa of Tanzania, was profoundly impacted by a meeting with another entrepreneur from a neighboring village.
“I saw her dedication to providing clean products in our community. I was inspired and decided to take the opportunity because I believed I was also capable of doing the business,” Luciana recalls.
Luciana, both a farmer and a basket weaver, faced challenges supporting her family of five. Their sole source of evening light was a dim kerosene lantern. Luciana describes it as “staying in darkness.”
Today, Luciana is an ambassador for change in her community, championing the benefits of clean and affordable lighting. She credits her growth to her regular business training from Solar Sister.
“The digital literacy training from Solar Sister has boosted my confidence and helped me grow my business and better serve my community. Leadership and Empowerment is a topic that allowed me to be more confident and independent, and manage myself with my strengths.”
While Luciana had always harbored a dream of being an entrepreneur through her basket weaving, she wasn’t sure how to begin. With guidance from Solar Sister, not only has she expanded her basket sales, but she’s also successfully promoting solar lights.
At fifty-two, Luciana remains committed to ensuring her children receive a quality education. She believes in the power and resilience of women.
“A woman is the mirror of society, and her family depends on her. I’m referring to the slogan, ‘If you want something said, ask men, but if you want something done, ask a woman.’ Solar Sister, though women, has enabled the community to get clean energy.”
