In Memory of Alex Mutua

June 21, 2024

It is with profound sorrow that we convey the message of the demise of our Moyale Business Development Associate Alex Mutua through a tragic road accident in Marsabit, Kenya, on 14th June at 5:30 am.

Alex’s professional journey at Solar Sister began in 2021 when he was recruited as an agent by the Business Development Manager in Meru, Mr. Eric Baya. His exceptional performance led to his promotion to Business Development Manager in Moyale, where he effectively managed agents and Solar Sister entrepreneurs. This trajectory of success was tragically cut short by his untimely death last week.

His sudden death has left pain and shock amongst his peers at Solar Sister, who praised Alex as the “heart of the team” at the recently concluded staff summit, where most of his colleagues were meeting him for the first time.

Alex was in high spirits and engaged everyone at the summit. He asked questions, responded to all questions, and participated in all role plays. Throughout, he asked to take photos to make memories with everyone. We saw and experienced much love and care from Alex at this summit.

Colleagues at Solar Sister describe Alex as a diligent worker who demonstrates the highest level of work ethic. Alex was self-driven and timely in reporting and was awarded the Solar Sister Kenya Reporting Champion in 2024.

Alex was a great leader who regularly checked on his peers, who heavily relied on him for support and advice, especially whenever they faced work-related challenges. He was a team player and will be missed by the Kenyan team with whom he worked so closely. Alex Mutua would naturally take up the leadership from the hotel, guiding his peers on housekeeping, where and when to take meals, etc.

As the team embarked on the team-building activities, Alex mentioned his young family that he had left behind at home and that he wanted to get back to in one piece. He loved his wife and his young child.

Solar Sister has lost a family member, a friend, a leader, and a dedicated teammate.

“Our hearts go out to Alex’s family and the entire Solar Sister family. May Alex Mutua’s soul rest in eternal peace.”

Katherine Lucey, Solar Sister Founder and C.E.O.

“Words cannot describe what we have lost. Alex has always shown that it is possible. Alex took pictures with everyone, loved everyone, and reached out to everyone. This is too much pain to bear, but we can only do him a favor by releasing him. Journey Well Solar Brother.”

Finorah Manyala, Country Director, Solar Sister Kenya.

“Alex has left a big hole in our hearts. I am not sure this hole can ever be filled. “Purity, we are going very far. My brother Alex would tell me. I call him brother because he operated like a brother to me. He called me every single day despite our locations being miles away. We were recruited as Business Development Associates at the same time. Purity, we are going far, let us keep on with the hard work, he would tell me. I dearly miss Alex.”

Purity Chepkemoi, Business Development Manager, Nakuru.
