Our model is simple: we recruit, train, and support women to become clean energy entrepreneurs, equipping them to bring affordable energy solutions to their own communities and create sustainable livelihoods along the way. Since our founding in 2010, Solar Sister has supported more than 10,000 entrepreneurs, who have reached more than 3.4 million people with clean energy solutions.
Key Responsibilities & Time Allocation
Accounts & Bookkeeping (30%)

- Manage all core accounting functions including cash management, general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, disbursements, and payroll.
- Maintain complete and accurate monthly financial records using QuickBooks.
- Ensure timely preparation and reconciliation of the trial balance and monthly financial statements/reports
- Maintain financial documentation in accordance with internal policies and audit standards
Budgeting (20%)
- Lead the annual budgeting process across departments, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational goals.
- Monitor and report monthly performance against budget, highlighting key variances and advising on corrective actions.
- Support leadership with scenario planning and cost optimization strategies.
Pricing & Business Case Development (10%)
- Develop and review pricing strategies for Solar Sister products and services.
OVERVIEW
The finance associate is a crucial part of the operations team at Solar Sister Tanzania, managing financial tasks such as accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, donor funds management, statutory compliance, and payments. They also deliver timely financial insights to aid decision-making, ensure financial sustainability, and support the effective implementation of Solar Sister’s programs and operations.
- Build and analyze financial models and business cases to support new product offerings or scale-up decisions.
- Work with cross-functional teams to ensure that pricing supports long-term financial sustainability.
Compliance (20%)
- Ensure full compliance with all tax obligations including VAT, Withholding Tax, PAYE, corporate tax , NSSF, WCF,SDL, and NHIF, in line with Tanzanian regulations and international best practices.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of financial laws, tax regulations, and donor compliance requirements, and implement relevant policy and procedural updates.
- Lead internal compliance checks and risk assessments to uphold financial integrity.
- Serve as the primary compliance support and champion in responding to financial queries from both group (regional/global) and external auditors.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of statutory and donor-required financial reports.
Donor Funds Management & Reporting (10%)
- Manage restricted and unrestricted donor funds in line with contractual and compliance requirements.
- Track grant budgets and expenditures, ensuring funds are used according to donor guidelines.
- Prepare donor financial reports and forecasts and respond to donor queries in a timely and accurate manner.
Payments Review & Approval (10%)
- Review and approve payments, ensuring adequate supporting documentation and adherence to internal control procedures.
- Ensure payment processes are timely, efficient, and compliant with internal and statutory requirements.
- Act as a key control point in the finance workflow.

The ideal candidate is a strategic and ethical finance professional with strong leadership and business acumen. They possess excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, are proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office tools, and have a solid understanding of IFRS and GAAP. With the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, they maintain strong networks within Tanzania’s regulatory framework and are deeply motivated by Solar Sister’s mission to empower women through clean energy.
Minimum Job Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; professional accounting qualification preferred (e.g., CPA, ACCA).
- Minimum 3–5 years of progressive experience in finance management, preferably within NGOs or social enterprises.
- Proven experience managing budgeting, statutory compliance, audits, and financial reporting under IFRS.
- Hands-on experience using QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
- Willingness to travel between regions and remote locations as needed.
Compensation
Annual Gross Salary of between TZS 1,5000,000 and TZS 1,600,000. In addition, Solar Sister offers a generous benefits package, 20 days of PTO, a 2-week office closure in December, and a flexible work environment. Candidates will usually start at the lower end of the range.
